What Are You Afraid Of…?
Sometimes the thing you fear is obvious and possibly even avoidable, like spiders. But that’s not the kind of fear that holds people back in life (unless you live alone and that spider in the bath won’t leave). The kind of fear that keeps us from doing the things we most want to, is the type that sneaks up on us, hides in the dark and pounces unannounced. It’s that primordial, ego-based, self-preservation instinct that likes to play everything safe. But life really happens outside our comfort zone.
They Make It Look Easy
To demonstrate this phenomenon, we embarked on an exercise to bring up, and overcome, this type of fear. Trapeze is one of those art forms that looks so simple and easy from the ground, but once you climb the ladder and look down… That primordial fear that kicks in is often strong enough to make us turn back, even if we know, logically, we’re not actually in physical danger.
Do It Anyway
With the no-nonsense guidance and instructions from Richie Goana and his team, we weren’t given time to think logically or rationally, but instead relied on our body-mind and followed the instructions reactively. This forced us to push past the fear and focus in the moment. To feel it and do it anyway! It’s powerful stuff, to overcome a moment when the bigger part of you was saying “No”, and to walk away victorious.
Trust In Me
When we can evaluate our situation and see that there is no physical danger, and great rewards for doing what we want to do, but that fear creeps in – that’s the moment we most need to act. To trust in our own abilities takes experience, and experience only comes from doing. What amazing things are you missing out on in order to avoid that fear?
