Podcast Interview Summary:
Welcome to the Urban Monk Podcast where Dr. Pedram Shojai talks with Leo Galland about his book, Already Here: A Doctor Discovers the Truth About Heaven. They also share insights on human growth, spiritual growth and what it means to cherish the difference in others.
Leo was inspired to write his book by the death of his special needs son. Christopher, even though brain-damaged since a very young age, was full of insight and mischief. A teacher to his core, Christopher would instinctively shake people up and make them question their own assumptions and expectations. He challenged others to change they way they thought about themselves. Naturally Christopher would treat every single human being as an intact human being. He was never dismissive, always kind. And would automatically change his behavior to change that person’s understanding of themselves.
A Life Forever Changed
At the age of 22, Christopher drowned in 2 inches of water while hiking in Berkshire, Massachusetts. Leo and is wife were in New York when this happened. While awaiting news from the emergency room, both had a shared vision. Leo recalls the room they were in was suddenly filled with pure white light; it seemed to emanate from a being who appeared to be Christopher. Christopher in physical from would have had bumps and scars, but this being was perfect and majestic. They knew at this point it was Christopher telling them he was dead.
Leo, normally would have doubted the validity of the experience, and simply attributed it as a shared hallucination considering the circumstances. But three days later there was a second event that was impossible to dismiss as a simple hallucination. This time they saw a physical object, an identical yellow balloon most likely to be one of the balloons they let go, the day before on Christopher’s funeral. Also, this time there were five people in the car witnessing that same balloon.
Leo didn’t know what to do with this experience. He went back to his medical practice. Several years passed and one night was awakened by a voice (Christopher’s) saying, “You have to tell my story.” Honoring that advice, Leo commenced writing a book. During the time Leo began to have dialogues with Christopher’s spirit; where he revealed profound insights about the illusions of space and time. He also revealed the origins of the universe and the nature of the divine.
The Three Gifts
Three themes that were becoming clear through the dialogues were the gift of opposite, the gift of presence and the gift of timelessness. What was truly profound about these themes is that these were not just esoteric teachings, Christopher actually embodied these principles when he was alive.
The gift of opposite says that the purpose of our existence is to recognize and cherish and love others. The gift of presence tells us to be fully present in the moment. In life, Christopher had that gift naturally and also demanded that kind of presence with others. The gift of timelessness is about an eternal present. Meaning there is only one moment that contains all time and Leo really got how to understand it in a visceral way in his last conversation with Christopher. He told Leo that we are already there. Heaven is not really after life, it is beyond life, it is so much greater than life. In fact, there is no loss, everything that ever was exists now and everything that ever will be exists now.
Leo and Christopher want us to know that we will all have people in our lives that will challenge us, but when we can learn to be fully present with them and accept the differences (the gift of opposite) we can learn more about ourselves.
Christopher was here to be a catalyst for human growth and we can use the methods that he teaches by cherishing otherness and embracing love. To find out more about Leo and Christopher go to: drgalland.com
